Training Philosophy

There are a variety of different types of training methods available. Some people believe that aversive or punishment training is the only way to train a dog. Though these methods can be helpful in a few select situations, it is my belief that getting a dog to work with you from a place of respect and loyalty, as opposed to from a place of fear, will improve your relationship with your dog and have longer lasting positive results.

Patricia McConnell (2019) once wrote:

“Teaching what’s right is almost always more effective than correcting what’s wrong”.

This speaks to the very essence of positive reinforcement training. When you train using positive reinforcement, you reward the behaviours you want to foster thereby increasing the likelihood of them occurring again.

There are numerous benefits to this particular type of training such as:

  • you develop a strong bond with your dog
  • you build confidence in your dog
  • the whole family can be involved in training
  • it will improve communication between you and your dog
  • it can be used for several behavioural issues
  • it can be a lot of fun
